There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special.

The second floor was where James, Mary, and their daughters had their bedrooms. The sons’ bedrooms and a schoolroom were located on the third floor. Five bedrooms for up to ten female servants and two sewing rooms were also located on the third floor. A small theater and playroom were built in the attic for the Hill children and grandchildren. Sitting on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River and the city of St. Paul, the 36,500-square-foot, forty-two-room James J. Hill House stands as a monument to the man who built the Great Northern Railway.

The house is known for its unique design and colorful history. You used to be able to tour the house but now the new owners only make it available to the public during special events. This is the only Neutra designed home that is available for tours.
Early-stage homes
In 1882, James Hill purchased two lots on the far eastern end of Summit Avenue and selected the architecture firm of Peabody, Stearns, and Furber of Boston and St. Louis to design the mansion. He settled on Richardsonian Romanesque as the style of architecture. Named for Henry Hobson Richardson, it was characterized by balanced asymmetry, imposing facades of rough-hewn stone, and rounded arches. The house could be seen from the front on Summit Avenue, and from the back along the river and from downtown St. Paul. Unlike most neighboring homes, the Hills’ house featured finished facades on both its front and back.
Later history
Hill, his wife, Mary, and their children had moved through several homes over the years, mostly in the Lowertown neighborhood of St. Paul. The Hills planned a house with the latest in modern conveniences where they could receive and entertain nationally known civic and religious leaders. Upon completion of the Summit Avenue residence, Hill had the family's old house, which he had constructed in 1878, razed. After the death of Hill's wife in 1921, the house was donated to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. It was obtained by the Minnesota Historical Society in 1978 and today is operated as a museum and gallery. Many speculators, who had sold Northern Pacific "short" in the anticipation of a drop in the railroad's price, faced ruin.
Stahl HousePerhaps the most famous example from the Case Study House program, the 1959 Stahl House, by architect Pierre Koenig, boasts spellbinding views of the city from its perch in the ritzy Hollywood Hills. Thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows and daring cantilevering, the modernist dwelling has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, including Galaxy Quest, Playing by Heart, and Nurse Betty. While the estate is still owned by the original family, the public can schedule a viewing online. When the house was completed in 1891, it was equipped with the most advanced technologies of the day. Built during the transition between gas and electric lighting, the house was designed to include both. For security, windows and doors were wired to an annunciator system that would ring an alarm in the houseman’s room if they were opened unexpectedly.
Preserving History
We think it's one of the greatest outdoor spaces in Southern California, with the architecture eclipsing the collection it houses. An excellent example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture, Gamble House was designed in 1908 by Charles and Henry Greene for David and Mary Gamble (Procter and Gamble). Architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed it to in the style of ancient Egypt. In the early 1990s, it was expanded in what renovation architect Norman Pfeiffer called "Modernist/Beaux Arts style." Partly designed by John and Donald B. Parkinson, it was the last great railway station to be built and not the grandest, but it's been in so many films that we all recognize it when we see it.
The Boston firm of Peabody, Stearns, and Furber, which was known for its impressive mansions in Newport, Rhode Island, designed a massive Richardsonian Romanesque style mansion, then very much in fashion. The final cost totaled $931,275.01 including construction, furnishings, and landscaping for the three-acre estate. Grades 4-12 Tuesday and Wednesday starting January 10, 2023 A visit to this grand Gilded Age mansion will challenge students to use critical thinking skills to discover how railroads transformed America at the turn of the 20th century. I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19. Thanks to a lecture series that was happening I was able to get visit this amazing home for free. Docents were placed throughout the home to offer insight but it was nice to get to walk around on our own.

The mansion cost a total of $931,275, the most expensive house in Minnesota when it finished, and the largest in the state as well. In 1925, the mansion was given to the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and for the next 50 years, it served as an office building, school, and residence for the church. The structure became a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and in 1978 the Minnesota Historical Society purchased the house with funding from the federal government and the Minnesota Legislature. A resource for reliable information about significant people, places, events, and things in Minnesota history. In 1959, Hill High in St. Paul, Minnesota, was established as a school from the funds set aside from Hill's wife for education. The school, which was all-male, consolidated in 1971 with the all-female Archbishop Murray School to form Hill-Murray School in Maplewood, Minnesota. The Hill Library has developed numerous online programs and now serves millions of small business owners worldwide. By early 1916, Hill began pouring more attention into philanthropy, donating thousands of dollars to various institutions as he privately struggled with a variety of increasingly painful ailments.

As new warehouses and railroad tracks crowded the Lowertown residential area, and as Hill's collection of paintings and sculpture overflowed the house, the Hill family thought it was desirable to move. Hill also realized that recent improvements in home technology, such as electric lighting, plumbing, ventilation, and fireproofing, could be incorporated into a new home. Moreover, since Hill was becoming a socially prominent person in the community, a new home would stand as a tribute to his status as the "Empire Builder". Built in 1960 at 7776 Torreyson Drive in West Hollywood (in the hills overlooking Studio City and just off Mulholland Drive), The Chemosphere was designed by architect John Lautner. The Chemosphere House designed by the architect John Lautner for Nouard Gootgeld. The house looks beautiful but from the reviews that I have read, the gardens are truly what people love.
In Greater Minnesota
To promote settlement and revenue for his rail business, Hill experimented with agriculture and worked to hybridize Russian wheat for Dakota soil and weather conditions. He also ran model experimental farms in Minnesota, such as North Oaks, to develop superior livestock and crop yields for the settlers locating near his railroads. The Democratic Party's continued enchantment with the populist William Jennings Bryan led Hill to support Republican presidential candidates William McKinley (1896 and 1900), Theodore Roosevelt (1904), and William Howard Taft (1908 and 1912). Hill was a supporter of free trade and was one of the few supporters of free trade with Canada. Hill chose to build his railroad north of the competing Northern Pacific line, which had reached the Pacific Northwest over much more difficult terrain with more bridges, steeper grades, and tunnelling. Hill did much of the route planning himself, travelling over proposed routes on horseback.

We think it's one of the greatest outdoor spaces in Southern California, with the architecture eclipsing the collection it houses. An excellent example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture, Gamble House was designed in 1908 by Charles and Henry Greene for David and Mary Gamble (Procter and Gamble). Architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed it to in the style of ancient Egypt. In the early 1990s, it was expanded in what renovation architect Norman Pfeiffer called "Modernist/Beaux Arts style." Partly designed by John and Donald B. Parkinson, it was the last great railway station to be built and not the grandest, but it's been in so many films that we all recognize it when we see it.

Chrysanthemums from the mansion’s greenhouses are used in the decorations. President William McKinley is received at the Hill mansion during his visit to St. Paul in October. A dinner is given for Monsignor Francesco Satolli, first Apostolic Delegate to the United States, during his visit for the dedication of St. Paul Seminary on September 5. Workers finish construction of the James J. Hill House, equipped with the most advanced technologies of its day, in 1891.
Will Rogers was a popular actor in the early days of Hollywood. In the 1920’s he bought land in Santa Monica and his 359 acres included some land that would later become part of Pacific Palisades. In the 1940s his wife, Betty left their 31 room ranch and the land to the California State Parks. Some of the houses are famous because of the architecture while others are famous for being used in movies and tv shows. There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special.
The third floor contained rooms for their sons James, Walter, and Louis (who later succeeded his father as president of the Great Northern Railway). It also had a room that served as a gymnasium and school room for the children, as well as quarters for the servants. The Derby House was built for businessman James Derby, though due to a separation with his wife he would never live here. The textile blocks are supposed to help keep the interior bright.
Other rooms in the house, particularly on the second floor where most of the family members lived, do not have hand carved woodwork, but the woodwork is still richly colored and nicely detailed. To go with the hand carved woodwork in the formal dining room, there was also gold leaf plate on the ceiling. The Eames House, also known as case study #8, is mid-20th century modern architecture. The house was designed by the couple Ray and Charles Eames to serve as their home and studio. Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house.

The house is known for its unique design and colorful history. You used to be able to tour the house but now the new owners only make it available to the public during special events. This is the only Neutra designed home that is available for tours.

The house had a hybrid system of gas and electric lighting, with rotary switches on the walls to turn on the electric lights. However, there were no electrical outlets installed, because during that era electricity was only used for lighting. The woodwork in the house is very intricate, with hand-carved woodworking in the central hallway, the formal dining room, and the music room.

Future of the ALCM
A $25.9m contract for Tomahawk missile composite capsule launching systems (C/CLS) was awarded in December 2014. The C/CLS is integrated with the nuclear-powered fast-attack submarines and nuclear-powered guided-missile submarines, allowing the missile to be launched from submarines. US Navy launch platforms were modified to accommodate upgraded Tomahawk missile variants.

The main outcome of the United States Navy submarine missile project was the SSM-N-8 Regulus missile, based upon the V-1. But China’s losses were far greater, and more important to the war’s outcome. Nearly 140 Chinese ships sank to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, including most of the transport ships hauling and supplying the invasion force. While American submarines accounted for many of the sinkings, it’s the bombers—USAF B-1s, B-2s and B-52s armed with JASSM-ERs and flying from bases well outside the range of Chinese missiles—that inflicted the most destruction. The document omits past discussions on directed-energy missile defense systems.
Improved JASSM versions
The W80-4 warhead, now under development by NNSA for the LRSO, could be adapted for use in the SLCM-N. The decision to reintroduce the SLCM-N was not taken lightly in the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review; it was evaluated for need, cost, the burden on the US Navy, and how it might affect other nuclear modernization programs then underway. The expansion of Russian and Chinese regional nuclear forces made this decision necessary. Russia maintains about two thousand “tactical” nuclear weapons that can be deployed on land, at sea, and delivered by aircraft. China possesses about one thousand regional missiles that can be armed with conventional or nuclear warheads. None of these weapons are limited by treaty, and they far exceed US regional nuclear capabilities—a disparity noticed by US allies.

Significant costs can be avoided by modifying existing or planned missiles rather than commencing a new developmental program. The Long Range Stand Off missile (LRSO)—a replacement for the current air-launched cruise missile—is already under development and may be adaptable for use on a submarine. Likewise, the US Navy should evaluate whether the current fifth-generation Tomahawk sea-launched cruise missile could be suitable for this role. After all, a previous version was employed with a nuclear warhead during the Cold War.

Over 3,000 AGM-86Bs were scheduled for procurement starting in 1982, but by 1986, production was terminated in favor of the AGM-129. Between 1982 and 1986, 1,715 AGM-86Bs were produced.9 Currently, the stockpile has been reduced to around 528. In 1998, a life extension program was initiated to refurbish the nuclear warheads carried by the AGM-86B and is expected to keep them operational through 2030, until its expected replacement, the Long-Range Standoff Weapon (LRSO), enters service. During the opening salvos of a regional attack, military planning calls for sea-based Tomahawks to be used to compromise and suppress enemy air operations and defenses. Tomahawks may be retasked in flight, possibly circling for a period before their human handlers select another target for them to attack.
Problematic development
This eliminated the need for ALCM to fit in the B-1's bomb bay, and the length limitations that implied. The Air Force decided to cancel production of the A-model ALCM, and replace it with either an air-launched version of the SLCM, or the ERV. The ERV flew in August 1979, and was declared the winner of the head-to-head fly-off against the SLCM in March 1980.
But lest anyone in Washington, Tokyo or Taipei prematurely declare victory over Beijing, CSIS’s analysts pointed out one huge uncertainty. The missile’s infrared seeker expects the contrast and clutter you typically see over dry ground. Eric Wertheim, author of Combat Fleets of the World, compared the SM-6 to the carrier-launched F/A-18 fighter, which is equally capable of dogfighting and ground-attack missions. The SM-6 “does for VLS tubes what the multi-role F-18 did for carriers,” Wertheim said. If the whole U.S. fleet sortied at once, it could bring 10,000 missiles to bear. But not all of those munitions would be useful in any particular battle.
The LRSO entered development under the Obama administration, but the SLCM-N joined the future arsenal following the Trump administration’s Nuclear Posture Review. A Navy analysis recommended developing the SLCM-N as a nuclear variant for the Next-Generation Land Attack Weapon (NGLAW), which is intended to replace the ship- and surface-launched Tomahawk. Enter the SM-6, a highly-evolved variant of the basic Standard Missile that, for half a century, has defended the U.S. and allied fleets from enemy aircraft and missiles. The 22-foot, two-stage missile, a Raytheon product, entered service in 2013.
Often variants of the same missile are produced for different launch platforms (for instance, air- and submarine-launched versions). AMD is necessary not only for fixed infrastructure, but for “joint maneuver forces.” It is all well and good to move swiftly around the battlefield, but loitering munitions and cruise missile targeting has dramatically improved. With limited room to move on a small island like Guam—where launchers have little place to be repositioned—it may not be worth the time and expense to require AMD elements to be fully mobile. When one must defend what one cannot move or hide, fixed emplacements may be good enough.
